In his 1645 work A Looking Glass for Good Women, John Brinsley the Younger seeks to hold a mirror up to all of Eveβs daughters, and show them how Eveβs sin has affected them, corrupting their nature in a peculiarly different way to men. Brinsley explains how Eve was uniquely punished for her sin in hearkening to the serpent, and then persuading her husband to indulge in the same sin as she did. He also warns strongly against the heresy of women teaching in the church of God β and much more besides. In the 17th century, Clement Barksdale gleaned some of the best points made by Johannes Buxtorf in his Commentarius Masoretichus, and distilled these into a small volume that we are presenting.
During the Reformation, Buxtorf was widely considered as the major expert on the Hebrew of Scripture.
Barksdaleβs abridgement shows Buxtorfβs theory about the Hebrew text of Scripture: that not only were the letters or consonants inspired, but also the Hebrew vowel markings too. To prove his point, he shows the antiquity of the vowel and cantillation points from before the Talmud was written, and from the time of St. Jerome.
Buxtorf shows from Scripture and history that the vowel points were not introduced by a generation of rabbis in Tiberias known as the βMasoretes,β but rather, stem from the days of Ezra and the Great Synagogue.

Friedrich Spanheim the Elder (1600-1649) was born in Amberg (modern-day Bavaria, Germany). Having studied at Heidelberg and Geneva, he became a tutor for the family of the viscount De Vitrolles. He traveled to England and in 1625 returned to Geneva, where he became chair of philosophy. He was given freedom of the city in 1629. From 1633-1637 he was rector of the academy, and took up the theological chair at the University of Leyden in 1632, where he took part in a controversy against Moses Amyraut.
