The English Annotations of 1657 FULL SET (9 Volumes)

from $40.00

The English Annotations was a collaborative English Bible commentary produced by leading 17th-century divines, intended initially be an equivalent to the Geneva notes for the KJV Bible. The project arose during the same Puritan reforming era as the Westminster Assembly. Parliament appointed learned divines to prepare annotations on the whole Bible: explaining difficult texts, comparing Scripture with Scripture, resolving doubts, and noting various readings. The monumental third edition of 1657 was so greatly enlarged that the title page advertised it as making β€œan entire commentary on the sacred Scripture”: effectively transforming the earlier annotations into a massive two-volume Bible commentary. Known contributors included: John Ley, William Gouge, Meric Casaubon, Francis Taylor, Edward Reynolds, Thomas Gataker, Daniel Featley, John Downame, John Reading, Mr. Smallwood, and Pemberton, whose prophetic material was later revised by John Richardson.
