This volume presents David Pareus’s De Potestate Ecclesiastica et Civili Propositiones Theologico-Politicae together with his son Philip Pareus’s Vindicatio, a substantial defense and explanation of his father’s political theology. David Pareus develops a distinctly Reformed account of the respective powers of church and commonwealth, the divine institution of civil government, the variety of legitimate constitutional forms, and the limits placed upon political authority. Philip’s accompanying defense situates those propositions amid the controversies they provoked and clarifies difficult questions concerning obedience, resistance, covenants, public estates, inferior magistrates, and lawful political action. Read together, these two works provide a rich father-and-son witness to the political thought of the mature Reformed tradition & to the debates over authority & resistance that shaped 17th-century Protestantism.
